I Know A Girl by the Hardtops, formerly known as Kind Of Girl, is a Hoax Lostwave. The song was uploaded to WatZatSong by Iullaby, who knew the song the whole time.

I Know A Girl was posted to WatZatSong by Iullaby on February 26th, 2024. The snippet was 30 seconds long but Iullaby possessed a snippet that was one second longer and completed the lyrics cut off in the WatZatSong post. They claimed they found the song on their sister's computer but couldn't find the title or artist behind it. The song was suggested to be created in either the 80s or 90s.

The search for Kind Of Girl gained traction on Reddit in June of 2024, when user D3O2 uploaded an anime music video (AMV) set to the song. This video contained clips from sci-fi and celestial themed anime and was reuploaded to r/lostwave multiple times by different users. The song was suggested to be a 90s Janglepop revival song by investigators.
Hoax and Discovery[edit | edit source]
The search for Kind Of Girl lead to some accusing the OP of using AI to create the song. This lead to Iullaby posting what most labeled an obviously fake new sample, theorized to be the original extended by AI. The creator of the AMV was also unwittingly roped into this accusation, despite having no knowledge of the song before creating the edit. Investigators ruled the snippet was AI generated and concluded the whole song to be a hoax. Then on June 18th 2024 , the full song was discovered by Strong-Lie6329 and Avery. It turned out to be I Know a Girl by the Hardtops. Despite the song being revealed to be real and genuinine, it was still confirmed to be a hoax as Iullaby had known the title and artist the whole time.
