One Love is a pop song which was composed by English musician Kamille and production group Red Triangle that was misattributed to the Barbadian band Cover Drive.

Background[edit | edit source]

The earliest known upload was on October 6th, 2013 to the website onlyvibe.com,[1] and was uploaded to YouTube one day later by user Samira Korcheni, who claimed to have downloaded the song from a website called ILoveRNBMusic.com, which shut down one month before the song's first known upload.[2] An upload from the same day is hosted on the website world76.spcs.bio, and the file's metadata credits PrimeMusic.ru as the original source,[3] but the song's earliest known upload from that site is from October 8th.[4]

The song spread around the internet, being uploaded to several obscure MP3 downloading websites[5][6][7] and aired on an Indonesian radio station called Memora Radio in November 2014.[8] However, because all of these sources were reuploads of the original which credited Cover Drive, they provide little to no information about the musician who created the song. Cover Drive have repeatedly denied any involvement with the song.[9]

Discovery[edit | edit source]

On August 29th, 2024, a cover version of the song was featured in a preview for Taiwanese singer Tzuyu's debut album "abouTZU", which credits the song as being originally composed by Kamille, as well as Rick Parkhouse and George Tizzard of the production team Red Triangle.[10]

On August 30th, 2024, Kamille (Camille Purcell) was contacted and confirmed that she created the song, and it was a leaked demo.[11] A listing for the song was discovered on the French music database SACEM, with English singer Cheryl Cole credited as an additional composer.[12] Cole has an unreleased song from her 2014 album Only Human called One Love, which suggests that she may be the original singer of the demo or recorded for a version of the song that is still lost.[13]

Former Leads/Theories[edit | edit source]

The moderator of the r/OneLoveUnknownSong subreddit believes the song is Canadian, specifically naming Kristina Maria[14] as a likely singer. The songwriter Krysta Youngs was also named,[15] but this is debunked as she didn't know the song.[16]

It is speculated that the singer may be of Caribbean or Afro-Caribbean background, as Cover Drive originated in Barbados, so similar-sounding artists would share a similar background.[17]

Another theory is that One Love was stolen from a record label between 2011 and 2013, possibly as a result of one of the numerous Sony Music hacks that were common in the early 2010s.[18][19] One notable feature on all of the websites is that the song "Forever," attributed to Senegalese singer Akon from his unreleased album "Stadium",[20][21] has been uploaded before or after Cover Drive - One Love,[22] potentially indicating that these two songs were from the same source.

Several hoaxes have been created for this song, most notably a user named "maelynn" getting their name added to Shazam in an attempt to monetize the music and claim song rights.[23]
