Into Paradise (previously known as "Tension Rising In The Air” or just "Tension,") is a solved rock/new wave song that was originally posted to WatZatSong by LORRAIN on November 1st, 2006. On July 23rd, 2024, It was identified as "Into Paradise" by Martin Nethercutt.

Background[edit | edit source]

On November 1st, 2006, the user LORRAIN posted a 15-second sample on WatZatSong. It went unnoticed for around sixteen years, and only became slightly popular around 2021, until it went widespread by q's video of the snippet on April 9th, 2023.^[1]

The OP is known to be from France based on his previous WatZatSong submissions, and his username can be traced back to a Dailymotion^[2] and YouTube^[3] account named argentanboy that posted WW2 videos about the history of Argentan, France, predating the upload of the song.^[4]

Discovery[edit | edit source]

On July 23rd, 2024, the song was found in two different commercials for the BMW Z3 Roadster from 1996.^[5]^[6]

After searching the extended snippet's lyrics on the German music database GEMA,^[7] the original source of the snippet was discovered in a 1991 TV movie called Ausgetrickst, with the music credited to German film composer Michael Hofmann de Boer.^[8]^[9]^[10] Michael was discovered to have been a member of a band called The Subjects, and the band's song "Paradise" was originally thought to be the song.^[11]

The GEMA database listing found for the song "Into Paradise" listed Michael Hofmann de Boer as the writer and Martin Nethercutt as the vocalist.^[12] Michael founded the song's publishing company, Whitehouse Musikverlag in 1988, so the song could only have been recorded between 1988 and 1991.^[13]

Around 13 hours after the BMW snippets were posted, Martin Nethercutt was contacted and confirmed that he was the singer of the song,^[14] but did not have a copy of it.^[15]

On July 25th, 2024, Michael Hofmann de Boer was contacted, and a relative of his confirmed that he has a high-quality version of the song in his possession, but he is currently on vacation and is unable to post the song.^[16]

Action/War Movie Soundtrack Theory[edit | edit source]

The most common theory was that the song was from a war film or action movie similar to Top Gun based on the lyrics, the "plane" sound heard near the end, and LORRAIN's interest in war media.^[17] It was assumed that LORRAIN possibly heard the song used as part of a soundtrack, be it a movie, an edit, or an ad, and stopped recording once the sound effect came in to capture the longest clear snippet free of dialogue and noise.^[18]

Halloween/Ghost Theory[edit | edit source]

The song was uploaded the day after Halloween, so it was thought to be from a Halloween-themed movie, show, advertisement, or other media, possibly a decoration.^[19]
