It's unclear when or how it was discovered, but searchers on Discord eventually connected the snippet to a YouTube channel called NeonBlue80. NeonBlue was accused of knowing the song and artist and purposefully hiding it from searchers, but in a later comment, he clarified that he simply doesn't remember the song title and does not care about the search.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/LostwaveCirclejerk/comments/1dfftw5/neonblue_is_no_longer_my_biggest_opp_confirmed/</ref> NeonBlue claims that he got the song from a blog, possibly [http://kissmar-2019.blogspot.com/ KISSMAR], [https://hardrockaorheaven.blogspot.com/ HardRockAORHeaven] ([https://www.blogger.com/profile/16712049956871620607 CamelBlue]) or Polix Soundtrack.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/Somewhereinthenight/comments/1dfgn14/possible_sitn_information_find/</ref>

After some research and outreach, we're largely confident in the following reconstructed timeline:

* funky_vinyls_records uploads a 48-second snippet of SITN to DailyMotion on May 23, 2008, as part of a mix video.
* A member of the Lyon Funk community, who we've identified, scrapes part of the snippet and shares it with other people, asking about the origin of the song.  This is where the 33-second snippet comes from.
* NimzoAOR gets the snippet, and shares it with gymforma
* gymforma posts it to WatZatSong in 2020.

There has been ongoing confusion that NeonBlue, another member of the Lyon Funk community, is related to the original posting of SITN.  This is now confirmed to be a misunderstanding; specifically NeonBlue is not funky_vinyls_records.

The search gained popularity in 2023<ref name=":0">https://www.watzatsong.com/en/name-that-tune/682223.html</ref>, and is now one of the most sought songs in Lostwave.

Somewhere In The Night is an unidentified pop rock song from a 2008 Dailymotion mix, circulated by the Lyon Funk music community and posted to WatZatSong in 2020.

Background and Search[edit | edit source]

"Somewhere In The Night" (SITN) is an unidentified pop rock song originally posted to WatZatSong by user gymforma on November 27th, 2020. On August 28, 2022, gymforma shared a slightly longer 33-second recording on MegaNZ, with filename "request 8.mp3". He shared that he got the song from a collector who we've now identified as NimzoAOR.

On June 13, 2024, a collection of 17 mix videos were found by Floptok, uploaded by a user "funky_vinyls_records" to DailyMotion. One of those mixes, uploaded on May 23, 2008, contains a longer ~47-second snippet of SITN starting at timestamp 6:13. In all, the 17 mixes contain 123 distinct song snippets, of which 120 are identified as of September 20, 2024. The official tracking spreadsheet for funky_vinyls_records' unknowns is here, and more information about the remaining unknowns is here.

After some research and outreach, we're largely confident in the following reconstructed timeline:

  • funky_vinyls_records uploads a 48-second snippet of SITN to DailyMotion on May 23, 2008, as part of a mix video.
  • A member of the Lyon Funk community, who we've identified, scrapes part of the snippet and shares it with other people, asking about the origin of the song. This is where the 33-second snippet comes from.
  • NimzoAOR gets the snippet, and shares it with gymforma
  • gymforma posts it to WatZatSong in 2020.

There has been ongoing confusion that NeonBlue, another member of the Lyon Funk community, is related to the original posting of SITN. This is now confirmed to be a misunderstanding; specifically NeonBlue is not funky_vinyls_records.

The search gained popularity in 2023[1], and is now one of the most sought songs in Lostwave.

Musical Analysis[edit | edit source]

A slowed sample of the beginning to Giorge Pettus's song "One Time Affair"[2] featured at the end of the snippet, suggesting that the song was from a mix. This also indicated that Somewhere In The Night was pitch-edited, as confirmed by the fact that in the discovered mix, the track directly before SITN, Something by Lava, was sped up by 15 BPM and pitched F# major, instead of the original E♭ major key.[3]

Leads[edit | edit source]

Possible[edit | edit source]

  • Alannah Myles: Suggested due to similar vocals and musical style.[4]
  • Jan Parker Stevens: Suggested due to similar vocals and musical style.[5]
  • Tom Harriman: Suggested due to similar vocals and music style.[6]
  • Steve Kipner - Slide Back Lucy - A Demo Retrospective (1982-95): A compilation album of unreleased demos by rock musician Steve Kipner, investigated because three songs are sung by different singers, and one of the songs on this album, Don't Call It Love, was another lost song that was discovered by NeonBlue.[7][8]

Debunked[edit | edit source]

  • Phyllis Rhodes: In June 2024, Phyllis Rhodes, former lead singer of the band Saint Tropez, was considered as the singer due to her similar voice.[9] Reddit user AltariaBoy contacted Rhodes, who initially believed the song was created by AI using her voice.[10] She did, however, suggest that it could be one of her demos that was never released due to legal or contractual issues,[11] however it was not found and the lead was debunked.[12]
  • Mark Scott: Suggested due to similar vocals and musical style, as well as the discovery of a collection of his unreleased demos on HardRockAORHeaven. Mark Scott confirmed that the song is not composed by him.
