Poor Christmas (also known as Eyes of Love or Come On) is an unidentified synth-pop song that was recorded from German radio in 1987, and was first uploaded to the internet in 2002 by user René on his website DeDiniDevil.de.

Background[edit | edit source]

In 2002, René uploaded a 1:57 snippet of the song to his website DeDiniDevil.de. He claims to have recorded it off the radio in October 1987 and remembers the artist's name as The Face or The Faith.[1]

Between 2007 and 2009, spiritofradio.ca user René R (not to be confused with the OP) uploaded the song to the site three times in an attempt to identify it,[2][3][4] and he was the first person to upload it to YouTube on March 31, 2015.[5]

On November 25, 2021, the OP uploaded his full recording of the song to YouTube, and adds that he possibly recorded the song from Radio ffn in Lower Saxony, Germany, or HR 3 in Hesse, Germany.[6]

Leads[edit | edit source]

Possible[edit | edit source]

  • Danish Origin: A user named Lars on the Spirit of Radio page states he heard the song in Denmark sometime in the 80s from a concert. However this is yet to be investigated.[7]
  • The Stage: Reddit user True_Phase3510 sprung up this lead while looking for German newspapers from 1987. They said the singers sounded similar to that in Poor Christmas and the name sounded a bit similar to what René remembered and added that the band released a single nine months before Poor Christmas was broadcast on radio.[8]

Debunked[edit | edit source]

  • The Present - Dance Away (Christmas Day): Not the same song.[9]
  • A Reflection - Christmas Day (Demo Version): Not the same song.[10]
  • Face 2 Face – Steal Her Away (This Christmas): Not the same song.[11]
  • Sinful Motion: Come Home: Not the same song.[12]
  • Slapstick - Eyes Of Love: Not the same song according to René R.[13]
  • Javori & Co - Your Christmas: Reddit user retrogamer7800 bought the vinyl and said it was not the same song.[14]
  • Face Of Grace: Norwegian pop band being investigated due to a similar sounding name, highly unlikely given that both of their released songs are nearly a minute longer than the song and feature saxophone, which the song does not have.[15] Debunked after Reddit user MJIgaz4 contacted an owner of their only released single on Discogs, who confirmed that they did not create the song.[16]
