How Long (previously known as "How Long Will It Take" or "Dollhouse"), is a solved lostwave song by singer Paula Toledo that appeared on various Russian bootleg movie DVDs in the mid-2000s.

Background

On August 30th, 2007, the song was first posted on the Ukrainian forum night.kharkov.ua by user Nega, and was reposted to mp3forum.com.ua on November 4th, 2007, but both posts received little attention.[1] The song was also posted by user Kieron on November 15th, 2007, to allthelyrics.com.[2]

The search regained popularity in mid-2020 after WatZatSong user alexx1984 reuploaded the snippets, claiming that it was sourced from a Russian bootleg DVD of the film Jacquou le Croquant.[3][4]

On October 9th, 2023, YouTube user ShaiiValley uploaded a documentary about the song, causing a new wave of interest.[5] The song was quickly discovered on two different Russian bootleg DVDs called МУЛЬТИПAРАД 3 and МУЛЬТИПАРАД 4 (MULTIPARADE 3 & MULTIPARADE 4).[6][7]

Discovery

On December 8th, 2023, Reddit user the-arabara found the song after searching for the term "How Long" in the SOCAN archives, a Canadian music licensing company. After finding the entry for "How Long" by Paula Toledo on the sixth page of the archives, the song was found in its entirety in the third episode of a podcast called Suburban Transpondency, which aired on October 1st, 2005.[8][9]

The song was featured in the 2005 TV movie Secret Lives,[10] and the Canadian sitcom 15/Love in 2006.[11]

On December 9th, 2023, Paula Toledo was contacted and uploaded an emotional YouTube video after discovering the search.[12] On December 19th, 2023, she was interviewed by CBC Vancouver regarding the song.[13][14]

Toledo released the full version of "How Long" on Bandcamp on December 13th, 2023, with all proceeds going to the Music Heals Charitable Foundation.[15][16] The song was later released on streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, but the official version was removed due to a duplicate, which led to the song being suspected of fraud.[17] On May 9th, 2024, it was reuploaded under the title "How Long (Will It Take).[18]
