Light the Lanterns, (also known as Illumination Night or Legacy), is a mysterious folk-rock song posted by Windows to Sky in 2019. It was discovered on a 1985 cassette labeled "Listen Today - Demo."
Background
In 2019, YouTube user Windows to Sky first uploaded the song to his channel, which was discovered on a tape in the Los Angeles area from the mid 1980s labelled "Demo - Listen Today".[1] In 2020, Windows To Sky made the song private after being harassed by another user who thought he had created it. Following that, he no longer wanted to assist with the search.[2]
It is assumed that the song is about Martha's Vineyard, a Massachusetts island, as this island hosts an annual event known as Illumination Night, during which lanterns are lit.[3][4]
Leads
Possible:
- The Skyland Band: A Martha's Vineyard-based band that wrote songs about the island.[5]
- Jimmy Parr: A Martha's Vineyard-based music producer and owner of the Parr Audio recording studio, which first opened in 1985.[6]
Debunked
- Peter, Paul, and Marie:[7]
- Hazlewood – Legacy: The album "Legacy" by Hazlewood was investigated because the vocalist's name is Grace and the song "Legacy" contains lyrics similar to LTL. Susan White, one of the lead vocalists, confirmed that "Light the Lanterns" is not part of Legacy.[8]
- Anna Byrne – Celebration: A Discogs listing for a single-sided cassette of LA folk singer Anna Byrne's 1983 recordings, limited to 50 copies.[9] Research revealed that Anna had been playing in Folk Clubs in the Los Angeles/San Francisco area since 1970.[10] Unfortunately, the owner of the tape was contacted and confirmed that it was not the same song.[11]
Lyrics
Presumed Lyrics |
[Verse 1]She was born on a magic island
There's a certain mythology I was already on the outside I wanted to be what I wanted to be She took me to Illumination Night To pass on the legacy [Chorus] Crazy ladies in gingerbread houses Light the lanterns for the shipwrecked sailors Celebrate the homecoming Celebrate the moment when The will to live collides with love Lights the lanterns, everyone And pray that the rain won't come [Verse 2] She left me with Grace the next year She went away, I don't know where Grace got drunk at a Chinese restaurant So all I saw were the lights extinguishing I'm going back on Illumination Night To see if I can light the lights [Chorus] Crazy ladies in gingerbread houses Light the lanterns for the shipwrecked sailors Celebrate the homecoming Celebrate the moment when The will to live collides with love Lights the lanterns, everyone And pray that the rain won't come Crazy ladies in gingerbread houses Light the lanterns for the shipwrecked sailors Celebrate the homecoming Celebrate the moment when The will to live collides with love Lights the lanterns, everyone And pray that the rain won't come |
