'''Ulterior Motives''', formerly known as '''Everyone Knows That''', was an unidentified 17-second snippet uploaded to WatZatSong on October 7th, 2021 by carl92, a user who's been inactive since December 2021.
'''Ulterior Motives''' (previously known as "'''Everyone Knows That'''") is a solved synth-pop song uploaded to WatZatSong by Carl92 in 2021. On April 28th, 2024, it was discovered that the song was recorded by Christopher Saint Booth and Philip Adrian Booth and appeared in the 1986 adult film "Angels of Passion".

Initially, carl92 claimed that he discovered the song on a DVD backup file dated to 1999, but that he did not remember its origin. He insisted that the song could be from the 1980s era.
== Background (October 2021 - July 2022) ==
On October 7th, 2021, WatZatSong user Carl92 posted a 17-second snippet of the song and asked for help identifying it. He claimed to have discovered the snippet in a DVD backup from 1999 among a number of very old files, and that it was a leftover from when he was learning to record audio.<ref>https://www.watzatsong.com/en/found/Christopher+Saint+Booth-Ulterior+Motives-719553.html?page=23</ref>

Since then, the search gradually gained prominence, with a subreddit dedicated to the song opening on June 19, 2023.
Due to the song's stylistic similarities to 1980s pop music, particularly after 1983, when the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer and LinnDrum LM-2 drum machine thought to have been used in the song were popular, it was assumed to have been recorded during that decade.<ref>https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/feb/28/everyone-knows-that-can-you-identify-the-lost-80s-hit-baffling-the-internet</ref>

Leads included the song originating from an unused Saleen car commercial, MTV broadcast, or advertisement. Prominent speculated artists were Roxette, Savage Garden, Richard Hozza, Osny Melo, White Mike Johnny Glove, Omega Tribe, and Second Guessing.
The first major lead for the song came on June 30th, 2022, when WatZatSong user niski discovered that the song has a pilot tone of 15.734 kHz,<ref>https://www.watzatsong.com/en/found/Christopher+Saint+Booth-Ulterior+Motives-719553.html?page=22</ref> which is the horizontal frequency of NTSC CRT TVs, implying that the recording could have been captured from a CRT TV tuned to a North American TV station.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/16f8o7a/why_i_think_the_song_is_from_a_commercial/</ref>

On April 28, 2024, Ulterior Motives was found in an obscure 1986 pornographic film entitled "Angels of Passion." The song was composed by Christopher and Phillip Booth. At that time, the r/everyoneknowsthat subreddit had over 40,000 members. The song is being planned to be released as a HQ version.
The song's origins were widely assumed to be in Asia because certain pronunciations in the lyrics were perceived to not sound like a native English speaker.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/15g426q/japan/</ref><ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/15gru5d/possibly_from_japan/</ref><ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/16747p5/might_be_asian_not_euro/</ref><ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/16f3cph/japanese_demo/</ref><ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/14m2n31/ive_reached_out_to_the_philippine_subreddit/</ref><ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/17x4o0j/the_philippines/</ref>

"Ulterior Motives" was recorded by Christopher Saint Booth and Philip Adrian Booth around 1986; at the time, they were members of the band Sweeney Todd. Because they were "doing anything to make money", they worked as production assistants in films.

One of their friends, who made pornographic films, needed music for one of their works and, according to Christopher, "[t]hey gave us quite a bit of money just to give them some music to use behind the scenes".
== Notable Former Theories (2022-2024) ==

As such, "Ulterior Motives", which was originally recorded as an unassociated pop song, was used in the soundtrack of the 1986 pornographic film "Angels of Passion."
=== Saleen Car Commercial (May 6th - June 15th, 2023) ===
In May 2023, YouTube users Bloodhound and glxtchedghost commented on a reupload of the song by user JayKay, claiming that the song was featured in a commercial for car manufacturer Saleen, with the latter claiming that their father worked for Saleen and had approved the use of the song for an unreleased McDonald's Big Win Monopoly promotional advertisement.<ref>https://youtu.be/IghQVUNR4po?t=331</ref><ref>https://www.watzatsong.com/en/found/Christopher+Saint+Booth-Ulterior+Motives-719553.html?page=18</ref>

Christopher said that the lyrics of the song were inspired by "a girl that cheated": "She was saying one thing and you found out that she did another thing". The song has been described as being in the New Wave and Synth-Pop genres.
On June 15th, 2023, WatZatSong user Kyle96 claimed to have contacted Saleen's customer service, who stated that the song had never appeared in any of their advertisements, debunking the lead.<ref>https://www.watzatsong.com/en/found/Christopher+Saint+Booth-Ulterior+Motives-719553.html?page=16</ref>

== Online search ==
=== Polish McDonald's (September 20th - October 5th, 2023) ===
On 7 October 2021, user carl92 uploaded a [https://www.watzatsong.com/en/name-that-tune/719553.html 17-second snippet of the song to WatZatSong.] He described it as "Mid 80s, bad quality," and claimed that he "rediscover[ed] this sample between a bunch of very old files in a DVD backup," and that, " I was simply learning how to capture audio and this was a left over."
On September 20th, 2023, Reddit user Alan2237 claimed to have heard the song on in-store radio at McDonald's in 2012, and that the song was recorded for in-store music and commercials.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/lostmedia/comments/149ysgn/comment/k1ghbsw/</ref>

Initially, the search was slow in gaining traction, but found a dedicated following over time.
Ten days later, the user posted on the r/everyoneknowsthat subreddit and claimed to have discovered that McDonald's in Poland had a music playlist provided by a marketing company called Mood Media, eventually distributing a fake playlist of 65 songs called logs.txt which they claimed they received from a "Mood Media consultant".<ref>https://undelete.pullpush.io/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/16w1ic2/everyone_knows_that_played_in_polish_mcdonalds/</ref><ref>https://web.archive.org/web/20231005124331/https://www.mediafire.com/file/dmyl3yah2iydlcs/Logs.txt/file</ref>

It was theorized that the song was recorded in the 1980s due to its 'stylistic similarities' to pop music of that time. The LinnDrum drum machine and the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer were thought to have been used in the song, as such, the release date was speculated to be after 1983.
On October 5th, 2023, the lead was debunked when Reddit user annabelsnd contacted Mood Media and confirmed that they had no records of the logs.txt playlist and that Everyone Knows That was not in their archives.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/170c2qn/on_the_phone_with_mood_media/</ref>

Some users, playing with how the song could've sounded, made reconstructions from the original snippet, while others thought that the song was a hoax "planted by a troll". It became WatZatSong's "most infamous and enduring submission," receiving the most comments since WatZatSong launched in 2006.
=== '''Joe Rinoie (October 12th - November 12th, 2023)''' ===
On October 12th, 2023, Reddit user P8L8 suggested that Japanese electronic music producer Joe Rinoie and his band D-Project may have created the song, as he has created over 400 songs for Japanese car commercials, many of which are unavailable online, and Everyone Knows That was thought to be of Japanese origin because of the way some words in the snippet were pronounced.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/176agec/singer_band_of_ekt_found/</ref><ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/17nxwaf/can_we_please_focus_on_the_joe_rinoie_lead_more/</ref>

The song gained popularity online in late 2022 and 2023, with a subreddit dedicated to finding the song and its artist being launched in June 2023.
On November 12th, 2023, Reddit user StarLink97 debunked the lead after contacting Rinoie via Facebook, who confirmed that he did not create the song.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/17td0h7/breaking_joe_rinoie_answered_me/</ref>

On 7 January 2024, two members of the subreddit were interviewed by French commercial TV network TF1.
=== Savage Garden (October 16th, 2023 - February 11th, 2024) ===
On October 18th, 2023, Reddit user Hey-Youngblood- suggested the Australian pop duo as possible creators of the song based on their perceived similar vocals and musical styles.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/17aiq5l/savage_garden_demo_lead/</ref>

In August 2023, searchers found a registered song by the name "Ulterior Motives" in Canadian music database SOCAN under the shareholders' names "Booth Christopher David" and "Booth Philip".
On November 17th, 2023, Darren Hayes, the vocalist of Savage Garden, made a post on Twitter simply reading "Everyone Knows That" leading to increased speculation that he was the vocalist behind the song, and that a full reveal could be imminent, though some users mentioned that he could be trolling the people searching for the song.<ref>https://web.archive.org/web/20231121144750/https://twitter.com/darrenhayes/status/1725697367461216265</ref>

== Discovery ==
In mid-December 2023, Darren Hayes deleted his tweet, but speculation remained on the subreddit about whether Savage Garden were behind the song.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/18mdmsp/is_savage_garden_not_trolling/</ref> The last known post about the subject was made in February 2024 by user TwilightOfGhosts, who suggested that the band played the song live on the TV show Musica Sí in 1999.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/1aogmyb/possible_origin_of_etk_savage_garden/</ref>
On 28 April 2024, Reddit users u/south_pole_ball and u/One-Truth-5867 identified both the song's name and the artist's names. The snippet was discovered to be from the 1986 pornographic film, "Angels of Passion." They both found that the Booth brothers had an credit in a copyright database for a song called "Ulterior Motives." From there, they discovered that Christopher Booth was a prolific songwriter for pornographic films, and watched his films until they found the song.

On 29 April 2024, Booth publicly posted an Instagram post recognizing the discovery of the song's source and the artists. He later uploaded a reel showcasing the original lyrics sheet for the song, revealing that the original lyrics were "Everyone knows it," instead of "Everyone knows that."
=== Osny Melo (February 9th, 2024 - February 11th, 2024) ===
On February 9th, 2024, Discord user SlenderGary discovered Brazilian musician Osny Melo, who shared vocal and musical similarities with the song and had worked in the Japanese music industry in the 1980s, creating commercials, TV shows, and movie soundtracks.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/1an8qpn/very_strong_lead_on_ekt_artist/</ref><ref>https://www.discogs.com/artist/4837651-Osny-Melo</ref>

On 1 May 2024, in a ''Rolling Stone'' interview, Booth revealed plans to release a new album with songs similar to "Ulterior Motives"; he had already found the song's original "rhythm track" but not the vocal track, which will be re-recorded if not found.
On February 11th, 2024, the lead was debunked by Reddit users numzyclumzy00 and kglove34, who contacted him and confirmed that he didn't create the song.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/1aoifsi/it_is_100_not_osny_melo/</ref><ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/1aohuz4/it_is_not_osny_melo/</ref>

On June 23, 2024, the Booth brothers released a remake of the song.
=== Omega Tribe (Carlos Toshiki/Koichi Fujita) (April 5th, 2024 - April 28th, 2024) ===
On April 4th, 2024, TikTok user vincemanuele discovered a potential lead while debunking a fake post that claimed a cassette tape with music created by Martie Echito contained the song.<ref>https://www.tiktok.com/@vincemanuele/video/7354127320627694890</ref> After contacting Martie Echito, he claimed that the song was produced by Japanese musician Koichi Fujita between 1984 and 1988 and was called "Material Motives".<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/1bwtxn7/new_update_on_martie_echito_biggest_lead_yet/</ref><ref>https://www.tiktok.com/@vincemanuele/video/7354493191103630638</ref> Since there was no way to contact Koichi Fujita because he had died in 2009, the search team looked into Fujita's music project Omega Tribe, specifically the band's second vocalist, Carlos Toshiki, who sounded most similar to the song.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/everyoneknowsthat/comments/1bwze4m/im_not_even_gonna_comment_on_the_og_post_cause/</ref><ref>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega_Tribe_(music_project)</ref>

Ulterior Motives (previously known as "Everyone Knows That") is a solved synth-pop song uploaded to WatZatSong by Carl92 in 2021. On April 28th, 2024, it was discovered that the song was recorded by Christopher Saint Booth and Philip Adrian Booth and appeared in the 1986 adult film "Angels of Passion".

Background (October 2021 - July 2022)

On October 7th, 2021, WatZatSong user Carl92 posted a 17-second snippet of the song and asked for help identifying it. He claimed to have discovered the snippet in a DVD backup from 1999 among a number of very old files, and that it was a leftover from when he was learning to record audio.[1]

Due to the song's stylistic similarities to 1980s pop music, particularly after 1983, when the Yamaha DX7 synthesizer and LinnDrum LM-2 drum machine thought to have been used in the song were popular, it was assumed to have been recorded during that decade.[2]

The first major lead for the song came on June 30th, 2022, when WatZatSong user niski discovered that the song has a pilot tone of 15.734 kHz,[3] which is the horizontal frequency of NTSC CRT TVs, implying that the recording could have been captured from a CRT TV tuned to a North American TV station.[4]

The song's origins were widely assumed to be in Asia because certain pronunciations in the lyrics were perceived to not sound like a native English speaker.[5][6][7][8][9][10]

The song was first posted on YouTube on October 10th, 2021 by user JayKay[11] and r/lostwave on October 13th, 2021 by user Null42x64.[12] The song began to gain popularity on WatZatSong in mid-2022 and early 2023,[13] and on July 11th, 2022, the song was popularized on Reddit after it was reposted on r/lostwave by user Excellent_Ad_497.[14]

Notable Former Theories (2022-2024)

Saleen Car Commercial (May 6th - June 15th, 2023)

In May 2023, YouTube users Bloodhound and glxtchedghost commented on a reupload of the song by user JayKay, claiming that the song was featured in a commercial for car manufacturer Saleen, with the latter claiming that their father worked for Saleen and had approved the use of the song for an unreleased McDonald's Big Win Monopoly promotional advertisement.[15][16]

On June 15th, 2023, WatZatSong user Kyle96 claimed to have contacted Saleen's customer service, who stated that the song had never appeared in any of their advertisements, debunking the lead.[17]

Polish McDonald's (September 20th - October 5th, 2023)

On September 20th, 2023, Reddit user Alan2237 claimed to have heard the song on in-store radio at McDonald's in 2012, and that the song was recorded for in-store music and commercials.[18]

Ten days later, the user posted on the r/everyoneknowsthat subreddit and claimed to have discovered that McDonald's in Poland had a music playlist provided by a marketing company called Mood Media, eventually distributing a fake playlist of 65 songs called logs.txt which they claimed they received from a "Mood Media consultant".[19][20]

On October 5th, 2023, the lead was debunked when Reddit user annabelsnd contacted Mood Media and confirmed that they had no records of the logs.txt playlist and that Everyone Knows That was not in their archives.[21]

Joe Rinoie (October 12th - November 12th, 2023)

On October 12th, 2023, Reddit user P8L8 suggested that Japanese electronic music producer Joe Rinoie and his band D-Project may have created the song, as he has created over 400 songs for Japanese car commercials, many of which are unavailable online, and Everyone Knows That was thought to be of Japanese origin because of the way some words in the snippet were pronounced.[22][23]

On November 12th, 2023, Reddit user StarLink97 debunked the lead after contacting Rinoie via Facebook, who confirmed that he did not create the song.[24]

Savage Garden (October 16th, 2023 - February 11th, 2024)

On February 9th, 2024, Discord user SlenderGary discovered Brazilian musician Osny Melo, who shared vocal and musical similarities with the song and had worked in the Japanese music industry in the 1980s, creating commercials, TV shows, and movie soundtracks.[29][30]

On February 11th, 2024, the lead was debunked by Reddit users numzyclumzy00 and kglove34, who contacted him and confirmed that he didn't create the song.[31][32]

Omega Tribe (Carlos Toshiki/Koichi Fujita) (April 5th, 2024 - April 28th, 2024)

On April 4th, 2024, TikTok user vincemanuele discovered a potential lead while debunking a fake post that claimed a cassette tape with music created by Martie Echito contained the song.[33] After contacting Martie Echito, he claimed that the song was produced by Japanese musician Koichi Fujita between 1984 and 1988 and was called "Material Motives".[34][35] Since there was no way to contact Koichi Fujita because he had died in 2009, the search team looked into Fujita's music project Omega Tribe, specifically the band's second vocalist, Carlos Toshiki, who sounded most similar to the song.[36][37]

Shortly after discovering the song, the Booth brothers began working on a recreation of it, which they documented on Instagram.[46][47] All of the instrumental tracks for the song were found, but the original vocals were not. Additionally, they chose to re-record the guitar track with the original MIDI guitar used in the song.[48]

The song was officially released on June 23rd, 2024, under the Booth brothers' alias "Who's Who" alongside twelve other lost songs on the album "Ulterior Motives: The Lost Album."[49]
