Light the Lanterns (also known as "Illumination Night" or "Legacy"), is an unidentified folk-rock song posted to YouTube in 2019 by user Windows to Sky. It was discovered on a 1985 cassette labeled "Demo - Listen Today."

Background[edit | edit source]

In 2019, YouTube user Windows to Sky first uploaded the song to his channel, which was discovered on a tape in the Los Angeles area from the mid 1980s labelled "Demo - Listen Today".[1] In 2020, Windows To Sky made the song private after another user claimed it was a hoax. Following that, he no longer wanted to assist with the search.[2]

It is assumed that the song is about Martha's Vineyard, a Massachusetts island, as this island hosts an annual event known as Illumination Night, during which lanterns are lit.[3][4]

Leads[edit | edit source]

Possible:[edit | edit source]

  • The Skyland Band: A Martha's Vineyard-based band that wrote songs about the island.[5]
  • Jimmy Parr: A Martha's Vineyard-based music producer and owner of the Parr Audio recording studio, which first opened in 1985.[6]

Debunked[edit | edit source]

  • Peter, Paul, and Marie:[7]
  • Hazlewood – Legacy: The album "Legacy" by Hazlewood was investigated because the vocalist's name is Grace and the song "Legacy" contains lyrics similar to LTL. Susan White, one of the lead vocalists, confirmed that "Light the Lanterns" is not part of Legacy.[8]
  • Anna Byrne – Celebration: A Discogs listing for a single-sided cassette of LA folk singer Anna Byrne's 1983 recordings, limited to 50 copies.[9] Research revealed that Anna had been playing in Folk Clubs in the Los Angeles/San Francisco area since 1970.[10] Unfortunately, the owner of the tape was contacted and confirmed that it was not the same song.[11]
