G.I. Joe Is Dead (previously known as "Overthrow G.I. Joe" or simply "G.I Joe") is an identified hardcore punk song by the American punk band The Systum. It was originally posted to the New Wave Outpost forums by user Guglielm in 2012, then was reuploaded to WatZatSong in 2014.

Background[edit | edit source]

On August 23rd, 2012, the song was first posted to the New Wave Outpost forums by user Guglielm as part of a collection of lost songs, but it did not gain much traction.[1]

On July 15th, 2013, the song was first uploaded to WatZatSong by user Guglielm,[2] before being reuploaded on August 14th, 2014 to add that the song was internally tagged as System - G.I Joe.[3] Based on the OP's other found songs, this song was most likely recorded between 1991 and 1993, and recorded from the WFMU New Jersey radio station.[4]

Discovery[edit | edit source]

On December 5th, 2024, WatZatSong user rocketball discovered a similar sounding punk band named Systum[5][6] and learned that the drummer had previously played in several hardcore punk bands in the 1980s.[6][7]

On December 7th, 2024, Discord user Funado contacted a member of the band, who identified the song as G.I. Joe Is Dead by The Systum. They claimed that the song was recorded in 1984 live at a New York City music club called CBGB.[8][9]
