Digital Girl
Digital Girl is a lostwave hoax, fabricated by Reddit and WatZatSong user haditonvinyl.
Background[edit | edit source]
On September 30, 2023, the WatZatSong user haditonvinyl uploaded a snippet of a mysterious song. haditonvinyl claimed that they had found it on an old CD originally owned by their dad, which contained an array of similar 90s and 2000s music.
Hoax[edit | edit source]
On April 3, 2024, a video posted by Reddit user u/AvantStory showed them playing a CD of a song attributed to the artist: “emails”. Upon playing the CD, it became apparent that Digital Girl was not on it, though the music had the same vibe. Just 50 minutes later, u/NotSureHowBigYouAre responded to the post claiming they had found the songs on AdvantStory’s CD on Soulseek, with two songs attributed to emails.
When investigating NotSureHowBigYouAre’s account, searchers found that the account had been inactive for five years and furthermore, they had a post on their profile called “OnVinyl” which was later deleted. From here, the search focused on the hoax lead. Some of the clues in hadinonvinyl’s story included him giving three contradictory recording dates, and the fact that emails’ account on Instagram had changed its username five times.
On April 4, 2024, emails uploaded “Lost In The Code” on their YouTube channel, along with several other songs in album “Digital World”. This satisfied the community and the Lostwave was briefly considered solved. On the next day, haditonvinyl confessed that Digital Girl was a hoax and claimed that it was a "social experiment".
