Fool In Love (formerly known as "I Was A Fool In Love" or "I Was A Fool") is a solved new wave song by New Jersey-based band Wind At Night. It was first uploaded to the New Wave Outpost forums in 2012 by user Guglielm.
Background
On August 23, 2012, the song was first posted to the New Wave Outpost forums by user Guglielm as part of a collection of lost songs, but it did not gain much traction.[1]
On July 12, 2013, the song was uploaded to WatZatSong by user Guglielm,[2] before being reuploaded on August 30, 2014 to add that the song was possibly named In a Variety of Love, I Was a Fool.[3] Based on the OP's other found songs, this song was most likely recorded between 1980 and 1983, and recorded from the WFMU New Jersey radio station.[4]
The song was most likely written before December 1983, as WFMU's general manager, Ken Freedman, who joined WFMU in December 1983, was contacted and did not recognize the song.[3][5]
Discovery
On July 28th, 2025, Discord user rocketballboi discovered the band Wind At Night while researching bands who performed at the Dirt Club, a rock venue in Bloomfield, New Jersey. One of their songs, Animalism, caught his attention as the instruments sounded identical to those used in the lost song.
Two days later, user Murphy found an entry on Cocatalog that contained the names of the band members. Shortly after, user Basketry contacted member Jerry Eckhoff.
On August 1st, 2025, Jerry Eckhoff would respond, saying the song was indeed made by his band, titled "Fool In Love" and recorded in 1983. However, more proof was still needed to verify that the song was theirs.
The next day, Jerry Eckhoff confirmed that he still had the tape with the song, and that he would send a copy on CD to Basketry, which was enough to mark the song as solved.
On August 22nd, 2025, user Basketry uploaded the full song to the Fond My Mind Discord server, fully confirming the song was by Wind At Night.
Former Leads
- Mark Robbins - Fool: British rock song suggested due to a similar song title,[6] confirmed to not be the same song by an owner of the single on Discogs.[7]
