Zoltan is a solved Hungarian folk song written for the French bank Crédit Agricole, and performed by Marc Beacco, composed by Vincent Barrès and written by Zoltan Lantos.
Background[edit | edit source]
On May 29th, 2019, WatZatSong user Mosiqa posted a snippet of the song with no information about where he got it. Users immediately speculated that the snippet was of Hungarian origin,[1] but the vocalist had an unusual accent when singing, making him unlikely to be a native Hungarian singer.[2][3][4]
The song was first posted on r/lostwave on August 6th, 2023 by user ruxmew. Users pointed out that the song shared a significant resemblance to the well-known 1979 song Moskau by Dschinghis Khan, leading many to believe that Zoltan may be a parody.[5][6]
The song didn't get a lot of attention in the lostwave community until January 2024, when it got a channel on Discord and a subreddit within a few days of each other.[7]
The clip's filename was "300x250_ca_ja_005.mp3", and some speculated that "005" may represent a fifth track on an album, or that 300x250 could be the original dimensions of the video the song was sourced from.[8]
On January 12th, 2024, searchers contacted Dschinghis Khan, the band that performed Moskau. They agreed that Zoltan sounded quite similar, but confirmed that they had nothing to do with it.[9]
Discovery[edit | edit source]
On March 28th, 2024, Reddit user Prudent-Feature-2412 found the full song in a Dailymotion video.[10] On the same day, Reddit user sevs55 discovered the original source of the snippet in an advertisement for the French bank Crédit Agricole.[11]
On April 2nd, 2024, Crédit Agricole denied producing the song,[12] despite overwhelming evidence that it was written for their advertisement.[13]
On April 14th, 2024, Discord user Nel contacted the music video's director, Samuel Dormond,[14] who confirmed that the song was created specifically for the advertisement and is named after sound engineer Zoltan Lantos.[15] The next day, Nel contacted Zoltan Lantos, who confirmed that he was the songwriter, Vincent Barrès composed and recorded the song, and Marc Beacco sang lead vocals, but the additional vocalists are still unknown.[16]
