== Origins and Search ==
==Background==
Uptown People was posted to Watzatsong by the user NY80s Tapes on the 2nd of July 2023. They said that it sounded like something ABP (a Scottish funk rock band) would make. A longer snippet was subsequently uploaded to Youtube.
On July 2nd, 2023, user NY80sTapes uploaded the song to WatZatSong, noting that it sounded like something ABP (a Scottish funk-rock band<ref>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APB_(band)</ref>) would make.<ref name=":0">https://www.watzatsong.com/en/found/Dolce+Vita-Break+Down+Those+Walls-776289.html?page=2</ref> Between 1980 and 1986, he recorded the song at a radio station in New York or New Jersey, possibly from WFMU, WFDU, WNYU, or a college station in the area.<ref name=":0" /><ref>https://www.watzatsong.com/en/profile/ny80stapes</ref>

The search gained traction in December 2023, when it was first posted to r/lostwave by user cynicalcleaning.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/Lostwave/comments/18d3l3v/1984_unknownunidentified_song_uptown_people_soul/</ref> In early January, WatZatSong users zman90 and PTV's Tapes contacted WFMU and WFDU respectively, but representatives from the stations did not know the song.<ref>https://web.archive.org/web/20240209015356/http://www.watzatsong.com/en/name-that-tune/776289.html</ref>

In late 2023, the conversation moved to r/lostwave where more information about the song was clarified. User Cynicalcleaning said they had spoken to the OP of the first Youtube upload who placed the song around 1984 in terms of time period. In early 2024, the community received follow-up clarification from NY80s Tapes that the song may have been aired on the WFMU, WDMU or WNYU college radio stations in the New Jersey or New York area.
On May 20th, 2024, the OP returned to the WatZatSong thread and stated that he believed the song was from 1984 based on the other songs recorded on the same tape.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/uptownpeople/comments/1d13cgy/ny80stapes_uploader_of_the_snippet_says_there_are/</ref>

When the station WFDU was contacted about the song, they said it was likely the song was played on their station as it sounded very familiar. They said they probably wouldn't have the cassette tape for the song anymore, so users decided to contact WFMU. They received a similar response - the song was familiar and sounded like it was from the early 80s but wasn't immediately identifiable.
On May 29th, 2024, Reddit user TriPork revealed that they had discovered the song while searching "post punk albums 1984 site:youtube.com intext:1984" on Google.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/uptownpeople/comments/1d33nu8/found_i_found_it_the_song_is_dolce_vita_break/</ref> They found a video that was uploaded by the channel Obscure Alternatives, and the song was identified as "Break Down Those Walls" from new-wave band Dolce Vita's self-titled album.<ref>https://youtu.be/6ss5WvkCAsA?si=-wJiEfqW614ydOMO&t=551</ref>

Current action to take to broaden the search for this song would be trying to find recordings of the three main stations from the time period and listening to them to see if there are similar or identical songs. Another avenue would be definitively ruling out artists mentioned as leads to narrow the search pool down

Background[edit | edit source]

On July 2nd, 2023, user NY80sTapes uploaded the song to WatZatSong, noting that it sounded like something ABP (a Scottish funk-rock band[1]) would make.[2] Between 1980 and 1986, he recorded the song at a radio station in New York or New Jersey, possibly from WFMU, WFDU, WNYU, or a college station in the area.[2][3]

The search gained traction in December 2023, when it was first posted to r/lostwave by user cynicalcleaning.[4] In early January, WatZatSong users zman90 and PTV's Tapes contacted WFMU and WFDU respectively, but representatives from the stations did not know the song.[5]

On May 20th, 2024, the OP returned to the WatZatSong thread and stated that he believed the song was from 1984 based on the other songs recorded on the same tape.[6]

Discovery[edit | edit source]

On May 29th, 2024, Reddit user TriPork revealed that they had discovered the song while searching "post punk albums 1984 site:youtube.com intext:1984" on Google.[7] They found a video that was uploaded by the channel Obscure Alternatives, and the song was identified as "Break Down Those Walls" from new-wave band Dolce Vita's self-titled album.[8]
