Spirit of Radio is a fansite for the popular Canadian Station CFNY FM. The site became popular because of its feature that allowed users to post unknown songs. Spirit of Radio is where many people were first introduced to The Most Mysterious Song On The Internet and Fond My Mind.

History[edit | edit source]

CFNY was a Canadian radio station that was popular in the mid 80s due to the fact it was know for playing a diverse variety of alt-rock, post-punk, new wave, darkwave and indie tracks. Sometime around 1984 - 85, the mysterious song CIA was aired on the station. In 1988, the station pivoted to to Top 40 tracks, which caused division among listership.

In the early 2000s, the Spirit of Radio fansite was created to discuss the history of the station, share memories, preserve testimonials and to share unknown songs. This last part lead Spirit of Radio to catch on as an early way to identify tracks that couldn't be searched online.

Changes to the Site in 2024[edit | edit source]

In 2024, users were barred from commenting on unknown songs due to excessive levels of spam and trolling. Soon after, the admins completely disabled the ability for anyone to post in the Song ID section as " The amount of spam, garbage, and off-topic songs being uploaded [...] has exceeded by FAR the amount of relevant, on-topic posts." (SoR Admin).
